Our Philosophy
At MegaSpirit Belgians we are striving to produce the ultimate Belgian Sheepdogs Black Beauties who can do it all from conformation to herding to protection sports. We feel that doing well in conformation is nice but not enough. According to the standard, "The Belgian Sheepdog should reflect the qualities of intelligence, courage, alertness, and devotion to master. To his inherent aptitude as guardian of flocks should be added protectiveness of the person and property of his master " The Belgian Sheepdog must have the drives, nerves, and structure to be able to work.
Our goal is to preserve and develop these wonderful traits without losing correct structure and hoping to improve the elegant type of the breed. Health is of the outmost importance in our breeding program. Our minimal requirements for breeding are Hips and eye clearances. Seizure-free dogs are a must.
We strongly believe that the only difference between the Belgian Sheepdog (Gronendael) and its famous for its working ability cousin, the Malinois, should be in coat color and length, and not temperament and drive. We also know that to produce that ultimate working dog, we have to go a step further then just to breed for a "good temperament". We need stable dogs with strong nerves and drives. The only way to know for sure if the dog "has what it takes" and therefore displays the true temperament for its breed is to actually work the dog on the field, be it protection or herding. We chose to do Schutzhund with our dogs because it is a fun sport to compete in. It challenges our dogs in many ways. Our dogs enjoy obedience, get very excited about tracking and absolutely love protection. A dog that is capable of doing Schutzhund protection work is reflective of the correct temperament for the breed because he demonstrates that he is stable and solid. Not every Belgian has to be a Schutzhund competitor, but stable temperament and strong nerves are a must for dogs whose main purpose is to be family pets. We are hoping to produce stable and reliable companions who will be family protectors, loving and amusing pets and kids' playmates. We like to see our dogs excel in protection sports and do equally well in the conformation ring.
